Coronavirus roundup: Developments in India and rest of world | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday said he has tested positive for coronavirus and is getting admitted to a hospital following the advice of doctors.
Shah, 55, stated this on his Twitter handle. The home minister also requested those who had come in contact with him in the last few days to get tested for coronavirus and isolate themselves.

Here are the top developments:


  • Recoveries among Covid-19 patients in India crossed the 11 lakh-mark on Sunday with over 51,000 patients recuperating in a 24-hour span, the highest recorded so far, pushing the recovery rate to 65.44 per cent, the Union health ministry said.
  • There are 5,67,730 active cases of the coronavirus infection, which is the “actual caseload” of Covid-19 for the country presently and account for 32.43 per cent of the total cases, it said.
  • With 51,225 patients cured and discharged in a day, India’s total recoveries have surged to 11,45,629 and exceeded active cases of Covid-19 by 5,77,899 as on date, while the case fatality rate has further dropped to 2.13 per cent.
  • The Union health ministry on Sunday issued a set of revised guidelines for international arrivals which will come into effect from August 8. According to the guidelines, all travellers would need to give an undertaking on the online portal www.newdelhiairport.in that they would undergo mandatory quarantine for 14 days, that is, seven days paid institutional quarantine at their own cost, followed by seven days isolation at home with self-monitoring of health.
  • A registry of hospitalised Covid-19 patients across the country is being mooted to collect real time data which will help improve treatment outcomes, analyse trends in the progression of the pandemic and calibrate response, officials said.
  • The ICMR in collaboration with the health ministry and the AIIMS is planning to set up the National Clinical Registry which will help researchers and policy makers understand effectiveness of investigational therapies, adverse effects taking place and generate evidence for improving the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
  • The Centre has written to all states and Union territories stating that smartphones and tablet devices should be allowed for hospitalised Covid-19 patients so that they can interact with family and friends through video conferencing, which would provide them psychological support. Though mobile phones are allowed in hospital wards, the missive was issued following some representation from the kin of patients alleging otherwise.
  • Megastar Amitabh Bachchan said that he has tested negative for Covid-19 and will now be quarantining at home. The 77-year-old actor, who was admitted to Nanavati hospital along with son Abhishek after testing positive for Covid-19 on July 11, expressed his gratitude to well-wishers for their continued support and prayers.
  • Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit has tested positive for Covid-19, but advised home isolation since his infection was mild. The 80-year old Purohit was on self-isolation since July 29 after three people in the Raj Bhavan tested positive for the coronavirus.


  • Delhi: Delhi registered 15 deaths due to the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the lowest number of fatalities in a single-day since July 1. The number of coronavirus cases in Delhi rose to 1,37,677, while the death toll mounted to 4,004.
  • Assam: The Assam government has issued a new set of guidelines, allowing inter-district movement on two days of the week, and hundred per cent office attendance from Monday to Friday. Night curfew from 6pm to 6am on all days and total lockdown on weekends, however, will continue to remain in force for now.
  • Andhra Pradesh: A complete lockdown will be in place in Machilipatnam from August 3-9 in order to contain the further spread of Covid-19. Officials said there were numerous Covid-19 cases in the Machilipatnam revenue division.
  • HP: Himachal Pradesh’s coronavirus count rose to 2,655 as 20 more people, including six armed forces personnel, tested positive for the disease, a senior official said. So far, 13 people have died from the infection in the state.
  • Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu went on a total shutdown mode on Sunday with the government imposing intense curbs as part of its anti-coronavirus measures, leaving main roads deserted while most shops, barring pharmacies,remained closed.
  • J&K: The government of Jammu and Kashmir has extended its Covid-19 lockdown restrictions till August 5. The government noted that in the light of escalating Covid-19 cases across the country, it was safest to extend lockdown restrictions till August 5.
  • Kerala: Kerala crossed the 25,000 mark in Covid-19 cases as 1,169 more people tested positive. With the fresh cases, which included at least 29 health workers, the state’s tally rose to 25,905 while 688 people were cured, taking the cumulative recoveries to 14,467.
  • UP: The Covid-19 tally of cases in Uttar Pradesh increased to 92,921 with 3,853 more people testing positive for the disease, while 53 new fatalities took the death toll in the state to 1,730.
  • Puducherry: Chief minister V Narayanasamy said the territorial government would soon open a hospital to offer treatment under the Siddha system of medicine for coronavirus patients. The Siddha method of treatment has been in vogue in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and a number of patients were being treated and cured of the infection.
  • Chandigarh: The Chhattisgarh government has set up 157 Covid care centres with 18,598 beds in the state for treatment of coronavirus patients with no or mild symptoms. Arrangements are being made to increase the availability of beds for such patients to 25,000.
  • Tripura: A two-day-old baby has died due to Covid-19 in Tripura, becoming the state’s youngest coronavirus fatality. With the new fatalities, the toll rises to 23 in the state.
  • Rajasthan: The Covid-19 death toll reached 703 as nine more patients succumbed to the disease, while 561 new cases pushed the infection tally to 43,804. There are 12,391 active cases in the state, while a total of 29,222 people have been discharged after treatment.
  • Odisha: Odisha’s coronavirus tally shot up to 34,913 with 1,434 fresh cases, while 10 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 197. Odisha’s active case count stood at 13,403, while 21,274 patients have so far recovered from the disease.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Eighty-three more people, including 14 security personnel and seven healthcare workers, tested positive for Covid-19 in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, taking the state’s tally to 1,673.


  • The pandemic has killed at least 685,780 people worldwide since it surfaced in China late last year, with at least 17.8 million people infected, according to an AFP tally on Sunday based on official sources.
  • The United States has the most deaths with 154,449, followed by Brazil with 93,563, Mexico 47,472 and Britain with 46,193 fatalities.
  • China registered 49 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, while 14 Covid-19 patients recovered over that period. Out of the 49 new cases, 33 are local, while the rest are imported. The country’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 84,385 while the death toll is 4,634.
  • Bangladesh recorded 886 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, its lowest daily increase in 85 days, taking the nationwide Covid-19 tally to 240,746. The officials attribute the decrease in the coronavirus cases to the lowest number of tests conducted overnight in the last 14 weeks due to the Eid-ul-Azha celebrations.
  • Nepal reported 246 new Covid-19 cases, taking the country’s total count to 20,332. Jageshwar Gautam, a spokesperson for the ministry of health and population, said that 111 persons were discharged after they recovered from the infection.
  • Singapore reported 313 new Covid-19 cases, taking the country’s total count to 52,825. There are currently 117 confirmed cases hospitalised while 5,628 are isolated and cared for at community facilities for mild symptoms.
  • Pakistan has recorded 553 more coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s Covid-19 caseload to 279,699. Six more people lost their lives due to the contagion, taking the death toll to 5,976.
  • Iran’s Covid-19 death toll has surpassed 17,000 after another 208 fatalities have been registered in the past 24 hours. Cumulative cases have risen by 2,685 to 309,437 in the country.
  • Ukraine has detected 1,112 new Covid-19 cases and 16 deaths in the last 24 hours. With these new cases, the total number of coronavirus count has reached 72,168 while 1,725 people have died due to the disease.
