Sign language will be standardised across India | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The National Education Policy 2020 says Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardised across the country, and national and state curriculum materials developed, for use by students with hearing impairment.
Further National Institute of Open Learning will develop high-quality modules to teach Indian Sign Language, and to teach other basic subjects using ‘Indian Sign Language’. Even local sign languages will be respected and taught as well, where possible and relevant. While the decision on sign language will benefit the deaf and those with hearing disabilities, it reinforces the need for inclusive academic material for persons with disabilities. As per the census 2011, there are over 50 lakh deaf and almost 20 lakh people with speech disabilities in India. Full story on toi.in
